Just Plain Bill
Internet Eternal Life
Once again, I received a message on LinkedIn
reporting on an anniversary of a departed friend. I’ve read several articles on
the fact that once you become part of an Internet site, you are a permanent
part of that site, unless you’ve designated someone as your representative,
complete with your passwords, to “take you down” electronically. In other
words, the site becomes a permanent part of your legacy.
If you’re like most people, we don’t spend
much time or thought on the fact that our life will end, perhaps sooner than we’ve
planned. Since it’s hard to imagine the amount of Internet “space” we each take
up with our messages, pictures or other entries, it probably doesn’t make much
difference that once you’re “on line”, you have eternal Internet life.
Food for thought, for sure, but I’m making
sure my wife has all my passwords so that I can have a respectful end to the bits
and bytes that I so faithfully maintain.
So, once again, I’ll respond to my departed’s
anniversary message by saying, “she’ll be missed”, and await the same
anniversary message next year.
