Just Plain Bill

Where does all the money go?

Over the years, I’ve heard of massive fines assessed to a variety of entities, such as: $8.9 billion to BNP Paribas, $4.5 billion to BP, $3 billion to GlaxoSmithKline, $2.2 billion to Johnson and Johnson, nearly $2 billion to Pfizer, and $1.4 billion to Transocean - to name just a few from the past 10 years.

I wonder why I’ve never heard of where any of that money goes. I imagine there are expenses related to the research and discovery, but where do those billions show up on a ledger of some type?

Most likely a trivial question in these times of crises all over the world, but I was just wondering.

Anyone have an idea?
